I have spent today finishing up the runner for my Mum. I used the Stargazing block from the Modern blocks book and then made a couple of extra little extra stars for the sashing.
I can't help thinking it needs something more, but can't seem to decide what! More straightlines, some handquilting?

So I need your opinions, would you leave it alone or add more? Answers on a postcard please ;-)
I like it very much just as it is. Perhaps ask Mum? unless you think she would just be polite?

Mmmmm maybe echo the straight lines 1/4" away? Or hand stitch colours round the stars? It is very lovely how it is xxx
ReplyDeleteI like it & think the binding could be just the right finish. Though IF you wanted, I think hand stitching around the 3 big stars would be a really nice touch too. (imho)
ReplyDeleteI like the way it looks ... but then I dont know where it is to be used... maybe you need to look at where it will end up then you can decide if it needs "something more " xx or ask your mum as she is the one who will be living with it xx
ReplyDeleteLooks wonderful. If you do handquilting just outline each star and leave it at that. (Says she who did that on her Wonky Stars quilt.)
ReplyDeleteI really like it as is but...if you were to add anything I like the idea of hand quilting around the outside of the stars.

ReplyDeleteI think it's fine, assuming that you are going to bind it. You could always add a bit of handstitching afterwards if you still think it needs a bit more, but I think it's lovely just the way it is!

ReplyDeleteIt looks great! I'd bind it first and then see if it needs any hand quilting round the stars (or quilted stars in some of the spaces) - good luck deciding!
ReplyDeleteI think just a fun binding will be enough. It's really cute! If you have time and desire, you could quilt around a few of the stars in a matching color (not white).
ReplyDeletePersonally I think orange binding, or bright coloured scrappy binding. I wouldn't quilt any more, certainly not before you've bound it. But it is absolutely lovely - really fresh. :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat about doing another line of quilting on either side of your lines now, echoing it to make the quilting "plaid" so to speak. Might be fun, add that punch your looking for.
ReplyDeleteI think you`ve done a fab job - funnily enough I made one of those blocks today for a bee! I think a bright scrappy binding would be lovely. But you know what? Your mum will just love it because you made it...and it`s gorgeous.

ReplyDeleteI love this but if it was mine I think I would add 1/4" line quilting all around the border (multiple lines) as it might help frame it better. That's just my opinion though. hugs

ReplyDeleteThe stars are swimming by themselves. So the two solutions that I have read outlining - not enough room for small stars so could only do the large but that doesn't solve it alone. Agree about the binding but make it scrappy from the materials used or similar/same colours.
ReplyDeleteThe other idea are 'shooting' stars not with guns but with one colour or one colour variegated. So from the lime green star (not in a straight line) a curved line which would go under black centred star ending under orange star. Another shooting star from other side (prob go through grey star ending at the orange star. Just use favourite straight stitchm e.g. running. I'd try it out with air eraseable or brush off marker to see what yoou think. If go ahead then only outline orange star could use metallic threads to embellish further.
Or just thought would you fuse applique on amaller/tiny stars (same colours as used) to scatter making a milky way. I like white space but for some reason the area just needs some dinky stars for perspective also. These would go between quilting spaces.
Just some thoughts to get you going as I love the scrappy/wonky stars.
It looks great Kelly! I would maybe hand quilt around some of the stars - but I really like the simplicity of it as it is.
ReplyDeleteNot reading any of the other comments first- I would probably hand quilt an outline around each star, perhaps in the main color of the star to start. Then I would stand back and look to see if it felt "finished".
ReplyDeleteI really like it but if I were making it I would add a lot more quilting lines between the ones you have there - to get to about 1/2" apart, although I would go for slightly random spacing so that there is no issue of getting it exact between the lines in place. Adding a lot more lines and then washing after it is bound will give it a real textured look as well as make it very solid on the table. However, if you are going for a more airy look, then bind it and maybe hand stitch around the odd star and make a hand stitched star or two in the white space and call it beautiful.

I would use the negative space to really go for it with different types of f.m quilting...pebble, meandering. To me it is saying 'please quilt me some more'!

I would maybe add an orange-ish hand stitch line around the blue sash on the white background (check on a colour wheel chart what the complementary colour of the blue is)? But I suppose it depends on your binding. I would also handstitch around the stars in white. But that is personal taste of course..
